On a recent, beautiful November weekend, Boy Scout Troop 120 of Pleasant Grove spent the weekend hiking and backpacking the Chinnabee Silent Trail on Mt. Cheaha. Spending the night at the Cheaha Falls Shelter, about three miles from Lake Chinnabee, the Troop worked on backpacking and camping meritbadges, as well as earning the "Leave No Trace" Award.
The Trail, located south of Anniston, just west of Cheaha State Park, is known for its waterfalls and woodlands, as well as a high level of difficulty, and is 6-miles in length, each way. And, the Trail begins in the Lake Chinnabee National Forest Recreation Area.
The Chinnabee Silent Trail was constructed between 1973 and 1977 by Boy Scout Troop 29 from the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind in Talladega; hence the name, "silent trail". This trail has quite possibly the most varied terrain of any trail in the Talladega National Forest.
Boy Scout Troop 120 is part of the Cherokee District, which is one of 14 Districts served by the Greater Alabama Council, serving youth in 22 counties.
